Special & incentive pays (tap any that would apply)

Special & incentive pays are taxable stateside, like basic pay — the math above accounts for that. The exception: in a designated combat zone, your whole month's pay is typically federal-income-tax-free (the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion; Social Security & Medicare taxes still apply), which makes these pays — and everything else — worth even more while deployed. We assume stateside, so the number you see is the conservative one.

Military pay questions, answered straight

Why does military pay look so low on paper?

Because the number people quote is basic pay only. A civilian salary has to cover rent, groceries, health premiums, and taxes on every dollar. Military compensation splits those out: housing and food come as tax-free allowances (or free barracks and a dining facility), and healthcare costs $0. Comparing basic pay to a civilian salary is comparing half a paycheck to a whole one.

Is BAH really tax-free?

Yes. The Basic Allowance for Housing and Basic Allowance for Subsistence are excluded from federal gross income under 26 U.S.C. §134 (see IRS Publication 3), and they're exempt from Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes too. A civilian would need to earn those dollars pre-tax — which is why the civilian-equivalent salary is meaningfully higher than the cash the military pays out.

What special pays could I earn on top?

Plenty, depending on the job you pick: airborne (jump) pay, dive pay, flight pay for officers and career enlisted flyers, the Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus (from $200/month at the minimum payable test score to a $1,000/month cap), sea pay, hostile-fire pay, and Special Duty Assignment Pay. Toggle them in the calculator above — recruiters rarely lead with these, but they're real money.

Does this match the DoD's own numbers?

It's built on the same official methodology — Regular Military Compensation (basic pay + BAH + BAS + the federal tax advantage) — then extended with the payroll-tax advantage and the value of $0-premium Tricare healthcare, using published KFF averages for what civilian workers pay. Every assumption is listed under "How we calculate this."
